Mobile Marketing: Surviving Mobile-geddon

On April 21, 2015 Google released a significant new mobile-friendly ranking algorithm that’s designed to give a boost to mobile-friendly pages in Google’s mobile search results. It’s known as the mobile-pocalypse or mobile-geddon. Basically, search engine results on mobile will no longer include websites who are not mobile friendly. This means you may see different search engine results on desktop vs mobile. Google designed this update in order to give mobile-friendly pages more visibility. In a world where we spend countless hours on our phones, this would seem like a wise decision. However, the impact it made on some businesses was catastrophic. For the businesses whose websites were mobile friendly, they had no worries. If they weren’t, time was lost and money was spent to catch up while other websites continued to flourish.

I’m sure many of you are wondering why organic reach on social media is declining. Business owners and page admins seem to think that since Facebook is pushing advertising that they aren’t showing non-paid posts at all anymore, when really the cause is over saturation of the market. As of January 2014 there 1.13 billion monthly active users on Facebook and 54.2 million total Facebook pages. All of these users and pages sharing content has resulted in a very competitive news feed. Further increasing that competition, the number of pages the typical Facebook user “likes” or follows has grown 50% in the last year.

Instagram and Visual Social Marketing

On Facebook earlier this month we shared a Huffington Post article about the importance of utilizing Twitter and Instagram, particularly if your targeted demographic happens to be teens. In the past year the number of teens who stated Twitter is the top social site more than doubled – going from 12% to 30%.
