The first week of February was a crazy one for the Hayse Marketing team. We were lucky enough to attend two extremely informative events. The first event was presented by General Assembly and was hosted by our friends at Facebook Austin. The featured speakers were “Shark Tank” success stories (and local Austinites) Beat Box Beverages and Monkey Mat.
In today’s business world filled with “sharks” that metaphorically eat up those who are ill-prepared or too whimsical, it was truly inspiring to hear from these energetic entrepreneurs. They didn’t just talk about the TV show, but also about the sacrifices all starts ups make to keep their businesses alive. Even cooler than hearing those stories, was the fact that both teams believed in the value of online marketing – citing Facebook and Google as powerful tools. They talked about the importance of maintaining a good email database for communications with your early fans, knowing your website statistics, and making sure you have plenty of website bandwidth for your projected growth.
The second event was presented by the San Marcos Young Professionals and hosted by the Greater San Marcos Partnership. The featured speaker was SXSW Interactive founder, Hugh Forrest. One of the myths Forrest debunked was that SXSW is not exclusive to film + music events. While the festival does feature film + music, it’s a place for business investors and startups to come together as well. Forrest goes on to say that you must always have a plan before going to SXSW events. The amount of success stories that take place at SXSW are unbelievable, but planning is still very necessary! Forrest also stated that while the badges are expensive, there are plenty of free events for you to make connections at, such as:
- SXSW Job Market
- The Dewey Awards
- SXSW Gaming Expo
- SX Create
- General Assembly Workshops
